Esmeralda Canyons off the Belize coast is an advanced dive through a series of deep, narrow canyons slicing through the outer barrier reef wall to 30 meters. The canyons feature steep walls decorated with vibrant deepwater gorgonians, massive purple tube sponges, and fields of wire coral. Strong currents funnel through the narrowest sections, attracting schools of jacks, permit, and the occasional bull shark. Each canyon opens to a different vista of the wall beyond, creating a dramatic sequence of underwater landscapes. This is one of the more challenging dives along the northern barrier but rewards with outstanding topography and pelagic action.
