Cabbage Patch is an intermediate dive in the Somosomo Strait area of Fiji, reaching depths up to 25 metres where enormous lettuce coral (Turbinaria) formations create a surreal underwater cabbage garden. The massive coral plates, some spanning over a metre, provide shelter for moray eels, lionfish, and an array of invertebrates in the shaded spaces beneath. Soft corals in contrasting colours grow between the cabbage formations, and schools of fusiliers drift above. The current flowing through the strait nourishes the exceptional coral growth. This site offers outstanding underwater photography opportunities, with the unusual coral shapes providing a distinctive backdrop found nowhere else in the Pacific.
